Time Management for Creative People

If you are a creative person and need help managing your time and life without losing your maverick creativity this is for you!

For the past few days & weeks I have been really frustrated.  I have been ridiculously busy but I can only recall a few things that I completed.  Ever felt like that? You are so busy working through lists that you somehow manage to miss out the important tasks because they don’t appear at the top of your list.

Now I am the type of person that needs inspiring but when I do get inspired I feel I can take on the world.  However, the problem for me is I can not deal with interruptions.  Interruptions destroy my flow and I become distracted and lose the initial zeal I had to begin with. As a creative person I find this incredibly difficult.  When I begin a painting I start with vision, excitement and confidence but the moment I have to leave the painting to cook or meet someone, well … my initial excitement has almost vanished.  Some people say to me I have to work through it but I can’t. It doesn’t work for me and my work suffers.  Last night I decided to read ‘organisiation’ books to keep my inspiration renewed daily.  Through reading I discovered some gems and I had to share them with you.

Now, not many people are ‘creative’ so time management and effective work issues are usually written by businessmen and women, in large companies or self employed businesses. Whilst these books are excellent they don’t tick all the boxes for creative people.  How can a painter, writer or actor be organised when our creative thinking is slightly more abstract? We rely on our abstract and sometimes unconventional ways to get creative, reading organisational books don’t always fit around our patterns, you know what I mean?

If you can relate then you have got to read this PDF by Mark McGuinness called ‘Time Management for Creative People.’  (link)

Please tell me what you think.  When I was reading this, for the first time, someone was speaking my language which made me laugh and chuckle so much.  I was over the moon reading this!

Please have a read and let’s talk. I am dying to hear from you who have the same issues as both myself and Mark. If you have any tips please do share! And if you have any funny stories please share also!

Also here is another resource that can help you.  I have been reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ and me being me, I wanted a short visual explanation of the book first to get inspired to read it ( yes, I need inspiration for inspiration! ).  I came across this creative youtube video that summarised it perfectly. Have a look and don’t forget to share your thoughts!
